“It doesn’t take much to spread hurtful words, but once you do, you can never completely undo the damage.”

Gossip is a rumor or report of intimate or personal nature concerning someone release to another person or people who are not supposed to know it. It often “has to do with faults and failings of others, or reveal potentially embarrassing or shameful details regarding the lives of others without their knowledge or approval.” A person who indulges in gossip or who habitually reveals personal or sensational facts about people without their approval is also called a gossip.

Gossip is bad

A gossip is a “scandal-monger” and delights in hurting other people and crashing their reputation by revealing privileged personal information or secrets to the public or those who are not supposed to know it. Gossips have the goal of building themselves up by making others look bad and indecent. Shooting people down makes gossips feel good and gives them the impression they are better than those whose ugly secrets they are revealing. They feel in control. But they are not!

Some men have this chauvinistic impression that only women gossip. They gossip but fan their ego with “men discuss issues of importance while women gossip”. Anybody can gossip, anyone can be a gossip simply by revealing something of intimate nature obtained or got in confidence! Men and women are guilty of gossip. It is important also to point out that some people thrive on gossip. They make their living spreading false, damaging, painful information and secrets of other people.

Gossip is very painful; it hurts. Gossips destroy people! Many people have had their reputation, relationships, businesses and family destroyed by gossips. One then wonders why a lot of people indulge in gossip. The reason is not far-fetched. Gossip is sweet and stirs pleasing interest and emotions– certainly when another person is involved. Nobody wants to be gossiped about but ironically almost everyone wants to hear “gist” (often same as gossip) about others. Many celebrities of our time rose to their heights riding on gossips! Would you now want be a gossip and rise to stardom? It is not necessary. If you don’t want it done to you, don’t do it to others. The golden rule says “do unto others as you would like them do unto you”.
